6 Questions to Ask When You Hire a Plumber

You can find plumbers in Toronto at a dime a dozen, but that's not necessarily a good thing. You don't necessarily want any old plumber to come into your house and work on your plumbing. Ideally, you want to hire a City of Toronto licensed plumber, because that way you know you're dealing with a professional master plumber with plenty of experience in dealing with all kinds of plumbing systems and problems that are unique to plumbing in Toronto.

As a homeowner, you need to know what questions to ask a plumber before you bring him into your house. Many homeowners don't know much about their own plumbing systems, and unless they bring a professional plumber into the home, the combination can be scary. Here are some of the important questions to ask when you call a plumber:

1. Are you a City of Toronto licensed plumber?

All plumbers should have licences and will therefore be able to fix a leaky faucet or clean a drain. However, if you are going to need pipe replacements, sump pump installation, repairs for frozen pipes, or remodelling installations, you will need a City of Toronto licensed plumber, who knows the local building codes.

2. Do you carry insurance?

While the insurance requirements vary by state, it is a good idea to find a plumber with proper insurance coverage. This should give you peace of mind in the event of any mishaps.

3. How long have you been in business?

In addition to carrying the proper licensing, your plumber should have sufficient experience. Ask how long he has been in business, and during that time, how many jobs like yours he has performed. Not all plumbers who have been in business for five or more years have repiped an entire home.

4. Can you provide any references?

Professional plumbers are well-loved by clients - after all, they often save the day when clients are literally (and figuratively!) deep in the doody. Check their websites for testimonials, and check online rating sites such as Yelp.

5.How much will you charge?

While they can't always give you final figure on the phone before they have assessed your plumbing system, you should insist on a fixed price quotation before they start any work to prevent any surprises later on.

6. Will I receive a written warranty for parts and labor?

Some parts and materials offer a lifetime warranty. Ask your plumber about that, and find out whether he offers any warranties. If he is not prepared to give you a one year warranty on parts and materials, you should probably find someone else.

It takes just a few poignant questions to find out whether any Toronto plumber is the expert for your job. These questions should give you the confidence to know you're choosing the right person.
