How to Avoid a Mess on Easter Sunday

Can you believe that Easter weekend is right around the corner? The year is already going by at lightning speed, but we're sure you're looking forward to a long weekend with friends and family. If you're hosting Easter Sunday dinner at your home, it's important to ensure that your plumbing system is geared to handle the influx. While making checklists and shopping list to plan your Easter get-together, be sure to take the necessary steps to prepare your plumbing system so that you can avoid any nasty surprises on the big day.

Follow our handy guide to ensure your home is ready for any spring get-togethers.

Keep Grease Out of Your Drains

No Easter feast is complete without a lovely roast lamb, turkey or ham, roast potatoes and other delicious trimmings. However, these meals are often laden with fat, and allowing that to go down your drain can cause it to build up in your pipes. When it hardens, it can cause nasty clogs.

Prevent grease in your drains by:

● installing grease traps
● draining the liquid fat into a container that you can throw away later.

Remember, FOGs (fats, oils and grease) should never enter your drains - it's not something that should only be avoided at Easter. Never pour it into your drains. If your drains are already clogged, you will have to use water jets or a professional drain snake to remove it.

Garbage, Recycling, and Compost

Your normal garbage cans may not be sufficient to cater to all your guests, and they may be tempted to flush the wrong things down the drains, which might lead to clogs. Be sure to provide garbage cans in all the bedrooms and bathrooms so that they can throw facial wipes, baby wipes, cotton buds and sanitary products in the bin, rather than in the toilet.

Place bins for different purposes in all the serving areas, and be sure to label them appropriately:

● compost - for all natural or plant based products, such as vegetable peels, tea bags, and coffee grinds.
● recycling - for all plastic, glass and aluminum products.
● garbage - for meat bones, leftover food, disposable plates, and non-recyclable or non-compost materials.

Clogged Up Drains and Toilets

Every Easter, the Anta Plumbing team is called out to deal with many different clogged up drains and stopped up toilets. When your home is full of guests, your toilets will be flushed many times a day. Consider posting a sign behind the door to remind guests not to flush any inappropriate items down the toilet, and provide bins for them to dispose of diapers and other items.

No Hot Water

The weather is not great yet, so you may not want to have a cold shower. Ensure that your water heater is in tip-top shape by booking a flushing ahead of the Easter weekend. By removing sediment from the tank, it will improve the heater's efficiency, ensuring that you have hot water. It will also prolong your system's lifespan.
