Plumbing Guide to Flood Preparedness Planning

Heavy rainfall and snow melts often result in flash flooding in Toronto, causing extensive damage to homes in the affected areas. Proper planning can help alleviate some of the risk, and in some cases, much of the damage. There are many methods and accessories that can help prevent flooding. The most essential tool to preventing considerable flood damage in your home, is to control standing water around the house, and it starts by being aware of the signs of drainage problems, including mosquitoes, ruined turf, mud, diseased or dying plants, foul odors, wet insulation, mildew, mold and wood rot.

By designing and installing a quality drainage system, much of the flood risk will be averted by directing the water away from the home and at the same time creating a better environment for plant growth. Importantly, it will also help to protect and increase the value of your property, bringing years of peace of mind.

A properly designed and installed drainage system does what it needs to, with minimal maintenance required. It offers better absorption and improves subsoil moisture conditions. What to Do Before, During and After a Flood Event

Before Flood Warnings Arrive

  • Create an emergency preparedness kit containing everything you need for several days, including clean drinking water, first aid supplies, non-perishable food, a portable radio and extra batteries, and other essentials you can think of.
  • Prepare the family by discussing how you will stay in contact, should cell phone service become disrupted.
  • Speak to Anta Plumbing about relocating your home's critical equipment, such as the electrical panel, hot water heater and HVAC.
  • Since most homeowners insurance policies don't cover flood damage, it is important to see coverage through the National Flood Insurance Program.

During a Flood Event

  • Keep abreast of developments by monitoring the internet, TV and radio for official information.
  • Follow evacuation instructions, if it is ordered.
  • If it is safe to use electrical equipment in the home, connect the sump pump to your basement drain plumbing.
  • Disconnect all non-essential electronics and electrical equipment, and move them to the highest floor of your home.
  • Move any important items to above the potential flood line.
  • If need be, shut off the home's gas and electricity at the source.
  • Never use any water damaged electrical equipment or appliances, and don't touch any outlets, plugs or cords in areas with standing water.

After the Flood

  • The Red Cross created a guide to repairing your flooded home, which provides a detailed explanation of the home restoration process.
  • Document the condition of your home by taking notes, photos and videos.
  • Contact your insurance company as soon as possible.
  • Clear any and all household drain plumbing.
