Water Leak Detection Tips for Your House

The drainage and water supply systems in a house consists of a complicated network of drains and pipes. In most of the houses, metal or plastic pipes are used for the purpose of piping. Depending on their functionality, these pipes can be classified as drainage pipes and supply pipes. Supply pipes generally start from a small chamber outside the house, equipped with a supply valve. The supply pipes are connected to your water supply tank that pumps water to your rooftop tank. On the other hand, drainage pipes are used to collect and dump sewage and domestic waste into the community sewerage system. If you suddenly experience a rise in your water bills, do not forget to check for water leakages in the house.

Finding out the points of water leakage is not really a difficult practice and there are a few simple techniques of  doing this.

The local authority provides a pipeline that carries freshwater into your house. Your water meter is installed somewhere within this line. During the harsh winter weather, water leakages are often found near the community valve or the water meter due to the freezing of pipes. Start from the water meter to find out water leakages in the house. In addition to the indicator,  water meters also have a triangular disk called the leak indicator. This disk keeps spinning if there is a leakage. Therefore, start your process of finding leakages with the leak indicator.

Find out a plumbing diagram of the house if you can. Follow each of the lines from its point of origin up to the outlet, according to the plumbing diagram. Leaking pipes always result in dampening and moistening of the walls around it. Carefully check each and every joint throughout the entire length of the pipeline. Damaged joints are extremely common causes of pipeline leakage.

The next step towards finding out water leakages is to check all the valves present throughout your house. Use of food color can be a great alternative in this regards. As an example, to find out leakages in your toilet reservoir, flush the toilet to drain out the reservoir completely. Now, pour some food color into your reservoir and wait for some time. In case you have a leaking valve, the color of water in the drain off bowl will change significantly. Replace your valve if this is your problem. You can apply the same process for your main roof tank. It is always more effective to use bright colors for food color test.
